As Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel and Spa opens its doors for the summer season, we speak to Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris about Taylor Morris Eyewear. Hugo rose to fame in in the TV series Made In Chelsea, and together with his best friend Charlie, they are celebrating their first international eyewear store in the heart of Port Soller!
Congratulations on your first international retail store – why would you say this hotel is a perfect fit for your brand?
Hugo: Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel and Spa has an unpretentious beauty and a timeless style. Add this to the romance of Mallorca and I can think of no better place for Taylor Morris to be.
Charlie: Mallorca is the most idyllic island in the Med for me, I fit in very well with its super laid back lifestyle. The hotel is the perfect spot for our first international retail store.
What do you love most about the hotel?
Charlie: The views, especially from the infinity pool. It’s so peaceful.
What are you most excited about stocking in the shop?
Hugo: We have some new designs which we are extremely excited to debut at Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel and Spa . It’s always thrilling for us to see what customers will want as we have a large and varied collection.
Charlie: We’re excited to showcase some of our new designs and we also had a great time sourcing local brands. We love supporting local talent and being able to meet local artisans and hear their story was really special – I hope it translates in the shop.
Hugo – you’ve been to Dubai many times, what do you love about the city? What’s your favourite Jumeirah property?
Dubai is a second home for me. My lovely father lives there. He however is a bit disillusioned as I no longer stay at his house as I am obsessed with Jumeirah Al Naseem. It’s one of my favourite hotels in the world. The staff are so kind and always make me feel welcome. I would say the best spot in the city has to be The Terrace at Burj Al Arab Jumeirah. So peaceful.
What are the must-haves in your own beach bags?
Hugo: Clinique sun-care products, National Geographic magazine and my camera. I love taking pictures.
Charlie: Aside from a pair of sunglasses, a sarong, some sun cream and maybe another pair of sunglasses in case I lose some swimming!
What’s the inspiration behind your latest frames?
Hugo: The Nomad collection is a reflection of our lifestyles. We always seem to be on the move and lucky enough to find ourselves in exciting places. This collection takes inspiration from all the beautiful places Taylor Morris has taken us.
Charlie: In our jobs we’re always chasing the sun, and during the Summer season are rarely at home, so we lead a sort of nomadic lifestyle. From our travels is where we found our inspiration.
How many pairs of sunglasses do you each own now?
Hugo: I think when I last counted at home I have about 40 pairs. I have a special wardrobe for them. However with that said I am going through an “only wear black phase”. We need the sun to come out in London!
Charlie: Compared to Hugo I’m actually quite restrained when it comes to sunglasses and tend to wear one or two designs per season. My favourite is the George Arthur which is a slightly smaller frame which suits any occasion.
What’s been the proudest moment for your company?
Hugo: I am very proud that Charlie and I manage to keep our sense of humour and always make each other laugh. Anyone working as an independent luxury brand will attest to the difficulties. Working with your best friend helps make it better – as does breakfast at Jumeirah!
Charlie: There have been many proud moments, but I think the proudest is looking back and seeing how far we’ve come. From writing down our business plan on a napkin in a London café less than five years ago to now launching our first International store in Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel and Spa , I have to say I’m pretty proud of that.
Any celebrity endorsements/celebs spotted wearing your frames?
Hugo: We have some wonderful clients from all over the world. I was very excited the other day as we found some great frames for a senior member of the Abu Dhabi royal family. She was delighted, as were we.
Charlie: We’ve been very fortunate to having many celebrities wearing our frames. Within a few months of launching we saw Rita Ora, Cara & Poppy Delevingne and David Gandy rocking our sunglasses. It means a lot to us having celebrities wearing our designs, but I actually find it more exciting when I spot a stranger on the street in our sunglasses. Knowing that they actively went out to buy a pair of sunglasses I designed is a pretty special feeling.
Tell us about your favourite places in Mallorca?
Hugo: C’as Patro March is awesome.
Charlie: I love going down to Cala Deià and having a few drinks on the beach. The Sunset Sushi Lounge at Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel and Spa is pretty amazing too. Great Gin & Tonics.
